INCREASING SUICIDES IN KERALA : A Critical Study

In a series of exclsive interactions aimed at expolring the cause of this social evil, Panakkad Sayyid Munawwarali Shihab Thangal talks to JAIHOON.TV about the various reasons for suicides in Kerala.

• The people are more bothered with those around them. The different sectors in society will remain whatsoever. It is futile for the lower to imitate the upper.

• After a child is enrolled in the school, the parents try to become the student than the child itself. The resultant pressure on the child leads to suicides

• Suicides among farmers is more related to financial reasons.

• Relying on God (Tawakkul) is the best option to stay away from suicides

• The institution of Zakat also helps to prevent gap between rich and poor.

• The arrival of Islamic banking practices also eliminate the evil of Interest in financial sector.

• Muslim Kerala which has good potential for Islamic banking in terms of wealth and leadership should embrace the interest-free banking alternative practiced by even western countries.

Panakkad Syed Muhammad Ali Shihab Thangal is undoubtedly a leading figure in Kerala politics. His personality towers in the social and cultural life of Kerala. All communities see him as a symbol of peace and tolerance.

Transcript Summary

- When Malik bin Dinar arrived in Kerala, he was received generously by the Non-Muslim brothers. Islam spread here through their peaceful dealings with the native people. We should adopt such peaceful means at the present

- The Sayyid families, traced to Hadramaut in Yemen, have played a leading role in Kerala Muslim community. They showed the beautiful message of Islam to the natives. They also led the community in the Indian freedom struggle. PMSA Pookoya Thangal had to suffer much at the hands of British colonial rule.

- Yemen is a land of historical importance. The origin of the primitive language of Arabic is associated with this land. Khalil Yahya Nami, the linguist, who taught us, visited Yemen for his studies on Arabic. (He also authored The Origins of Arabic Writing and Its Historical Evolution Before Islam)

- The Saba’ Dynasty was an ancient race who ruled Yemen. Queen Bilqis was engaged in building houses and conservation of rain water for cultivation of crops. The Marib Dam is 170km far from capital city of Sana’a. The dam is built between two dams. Trade flourished including with India. Goods which came from India were sent to Rome, Greece via Egypt on one side and via Syria towards Persia. Many temple’s remains can still be found today.

- After high school education, I studied Arabic for some years. I was interested in going abroad for studies. Upon the visit by a scholars’s delegation from Al Azhar in Calicut, I contacted them for further details. They gave a letter to Cairo’s Islamic Congress. I met with Anwar Sadath (prior to his becoming the leader). The hostel had inmates from Africa, Asia and Europe. I returned from Cairo in 1966.

- Whenever I visit other countries, I collect rare plants for my little garden. Interacting with them is a source of happiness.

- We are all creations of Allah who should live peacefully. But conflicts occur between fellow beings. The are peoples and communities of diverse nature in a land. Everyone should see themselves as creatures of God. This is the teaching of Islam. And this would strengthen the bond between humans.

Panakkad Sayed Umarali Shihab Thangal was qazi from Kerala, India. He was the qazi of Wayanad. He was the chairman of the Kerala Waqf Board and president of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham. Panakkad Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal was also the vice president of Samastha Kerala Jam’iyyathul Ulama. He is the second son of Panakkad Pookkoya Thangal and brother of the Indian Union Muslim League president Panakkad Sayed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal (late). Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal was appointed as Qadi of Waynad district. Thangal was appointed as qadi of many local mahals in Kerala.

He was appointed as the President of IUML after the death of his elder brother Syyed Mushammad Ali Shihab Thangal,on August 1st, 2009.

Haider Ali Shihab, president of Malappuram District Muslim League, talks about various issues like the organizing capacity of Gulf Malayalees, impact of vote for expatriates, winning and losing in politics, consoling party members in bad times, contributions of UDF government (20001-2006), ideal leadership, reasons for the low rate of suicides in Malappuram district.

Influence of Malayalee Organizations in Gulf Countries

The expatriates in gulf region has a major role in making development in their native country. Especially the organization like Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre has played an important role like helping the needy and generous contributions in the educational field especially in the Malappuram district.

Vote of Expatriates

If the Indian government gives a chance to the expatriates for voting, obviously the circumstance will change. Most probably it would benefit the UDF coalition (considering the massive membership of UDF-inclined organizations like KMCC)

Victory and Defeat

Everything has a positive side and a negative side. If one team wins the other should lose. It is very difficult to maintain the winning course. The crash in previous election was just a negative effect. We evaluated the conditions and found one of the major reason was that we couldn�t make a good relation with public. And also Muslim League had lost their organizational strength. Any way we now understood all our mistakes and we are now trying to build good relationship with public.

Difficulties faced to console party members

In the beginning after our defeat, it was very hard to make the members understand. But this attitude of members and public was automatically changed when the LDF government came into governance. Muslim league conducted various campaigns and went down to the people as part of the measures to boost the party image.

Contributions of UDF Government

Muslim League utilized well their position in the period of previous UDF governance. Especially in sectors like electricity, education, and Public Works. We got many projects accomplished. The public agrees with this on this aspect. But unfortunately in Kerala, the Government changes after five years.

Ideal Leadership

A person who is a leader not only in politics but also in any other sector needs some good qualities. Prophet Mohammed (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is a good example for this and everybody should follow his style of leadership.

Low Suicide rates in Malappuram District

In Malappuram district the number of suicides is less compared to other districts. I think it is because Muslim organizations giving religious education and conducting programs to make the people alert.

The growing Generation

The new generation is being attracted to awful influence. One of the most alarming situations is that youngsters are trying to copy the western culture. Even the college campuses are under the control of intoxication.

We need a civilized community and the Muslims should become the messengers of peace and disperse the message of unity between the religions. A good Muslim can�t take the side with terrorism or communal conflict. They should become role models for others in their lives.
